Lucy Dacus, Rolling Stone Top 100 Recs
FOREVER IS A FEELING - #95
GOOSEBUMP METER: 8/10
I wasn’t prepared for this. The sonics and lyrics were equal parts haunting and transformative. This is personal taste but Calliope Prelude being a purely classical piece is such an exciting and well thought out opening to this record. Almost like it’s priming you for the experience you’re going on. Plus the transition between Calliope Prelude into Big Deal is sublime. The train has finally let the station.
This record felt like watching a really good sportsman in a game, it just looks effortless. To the point of inspiration, it all just seems to simple and easy. A true sign of a master, the simplicity and elegance of this record is simply lovely. When she just kept repeating “you’re a big deal” I wish I could just stay in that loop endlessly, it’s such a warm sound striking my ears.
Ankles steps it up from there, the moment when the drums kick in when she says “bite me” always comes with just a little surprise and satisfaction. Genuinely, all these songs are selected with such care and curation. I wonder how many songs fell to the wayside before the 13 songs were presented before us.
The lore of Dacus’ life is laid bare before us with such comfortable vulnerability it almost as though she’s been sharing stories with us her entire life. It felt like I was talking to my friend after a few years and we were having a long, thorough catch up. The combination of the music and the stories told walked this fun balance of intimacy and retrospection.
This record is well worth the listen and I would highly recommend it. My favourite line is “you make me homesick for places I’ve never been before.”
